Recruitment challenges in the chemical industry and how our team can help

A significant short-term challenge for the UK chemical industry is the availability of skilled staff, compounded by difficulties in recruitment and retention. The industry has long struggled with ensuring a workforce that possesses the necessary skills. The pandemic has exacerbated these issues, while an unhelpful immigration policy and an ageing workforce have created a perfect storm of workforce-related problems.

Labour shortages are affecting the entire UK economy, with the employment rate still 1.1 percentage points below pre-pandemic levels due to an increase in economically inactive individuals aged 16-64. This rise in economic inactivity is particularly notable among those aged 50-64, who are long-term sick, have retired early, or hold critical skills within the chemical sector.

The overall decline in labour supply has pressured the manufacturing workforce. Currently, there are 3.6 job vacancies in the manufacturing sector for every 100 jobs, far exceeding the long-term trend of 1.7 and the pre-pandemic peak of 2.6.
